Abstract

In two studies, we propose a new construct of indirect voice and examine a model that explains why employees use indirect voice, how and why it influences managerial responses, and the boundary conditions in the whole process. In Pilot Study, we developed a scale measuring indirect voice and tested its psychometric characteristics. In Main Study, we tested our model using subordinate-supervisor dyadic data from a time-lagged survey. The results demonstrate that felt obligation for constructive change (FOCC) predicts indirect voice, which is further moderated by authoritarian leadership and employees’ other face concern. More specifically, the positive effect of FOCC on indirect voice is stronger when employees face authoritarian leaders or when they are concerned about other’s face. Furthermore, indirect voice leads to positive managerial responses, including voice acceptance, performance appraisal, and promotability, through a mediator of perceived indirect voice by supervisor. In addition, the supervisor’s meaning inferring ability moderates the relationship of indirect voice and the mediator. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
