Abstract:

Information systems researchers have traditionally relied on other disciplines to borrow and modify theories. Yet, the unique characteristics of information systems function require careful adoption of these borrowed theories. Information systems researchers have also developed new theories to address discipline specific issues. The reliance on other disciplines to borrow theory and the development of new theories create opportunities and challenges for information systems researchers. There is a need for careful assessment of the underlying assumptions that frame the individual thinking to borrow or develop new theories for research in information systems domain.

The domain of information systems research will be discussed and the purpose of research will be examined. On-going discussions about the effectiveness and relevance of information systems research to executives and professionals will be discussed. Finally, ideas about publishing in scholarly journals of information systems will be presented.
