Abstract: Traditional logistics infrastructures and even more so modern IT infrastructures are vulnerable to disruptions of all types. As recent natural disasters have shown, the more globalized and more interdependent the modern economy has become, the more dramatic the impacts can be. The talk starts with an overview of business continuity planning and then moves on to selected advanced approaches for improving the resilience of IT infrastructures, underlined by examples of advanced business continuity models.

Bio:

Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. DDr. Gerald Quirchmayr holds doctors degrees in computer science and law from Johannes Kepler University in Linz (Austria) and currently is Professor at the Department of Distributed and Multimedia Systems at the University of Vienna.

His major research focus is on information systems in business and government with a special interest in security, applications, formal representations of decision making and legal issues. His publication record comprises approximately 150 peer reviewed papers plus several edited books and conference proceedings as well as nationally and internationally published project reports.

Abstract: IT-Security and risk management are of utmost importance to the reliable execution of logistics processes. Only by appropriately securing the underlying IT infrastructure it is possible to run and uphold robust logistics processes. This talk will introduce fundamental principles to security, common security management practices, and information security risk management/analysis concepts. The audience will learn how to calculate basic risks and identify suitable mitigation strategies.

Abstract: Research grant proposals are an integral part of enabling and securing research in academia and industry. The first part of the talk introduces the audience to efficient research proposal structuring/writing techniques and project partner communication methods. The addressed topics include but are not limited to (i) matching the project idea to available calls, (ii) creating the big picture, (iii) structuring the project, (iv) financial planning, (v) project management, and (vi) commercialization of the project results. The second part of the talk will briefly introduce the Austrian and European funding system and will outline how Chinese organizations can participate in European/Austrian projects.

Bio:

Dr. Stefan Fenz (CISSP) is a researcher at Vienna University of Technology and SBA Research. From 2012 to 2015, Stefan is an appointed member of the European Network and Information Security Agency’s (ENISA) Permanent Stakeholder Group. In 2010, Stefan worked as a visiting scholar at Stanford Center for Biomedical Informatics Research at Stanford University (USA). In 2008 and 2009, Stefan worked as an information security lecturer at Konkuk University (Seoul, Korea) and University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien (Vienna, Austria). His primary research is on information security, with a secondary interest in semantic technologies and named entity recognition. Stefan received an MSc in software engineering & internet computing from Vienna University of Technology, an MSc in political science from University of Vienna, an MSc in business informatics from Vienna University of Technology, and a PhD in computer science from Vienna University of Technology. He is a member of the IFIP WG 11.1 – Information Security Management, the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society and ISC?.
